While browsing YouTube, I stumbled across the lovely Samantha Jane‘s channel, and had a look at her Canadian Makeup Brands video. When she pulled out the Joe Fresh Neutrals Eye Shadow Palette, my mind screeched to a halt and I knew right then and there that I had to go to Pharmaprix and track down this beauty so I could see it for myself.

After wearing it and playing with all the shades over the course of two weeks, I believe it’s time for an in-depth review.

the deets

First off, the Joe Fresh Neutrals Eye Shadow Palette retails for $12 at Provigo or $14 at Pharmaprix/Shoppers, and contains 12 eyeshadows at 0.9g each.

In my opinion, it offers a varied and well-chosen selection of mattes and shimmers in neutral tones, although there are some beautiful standout shades like the gold and copper at the top right, and the rose gold in the center of the second-to-last row.

the good

What impressed me the most is the great selection of shades and the overall quality of the palette. I think it’s really well thought-through, since pretty much all the shades go together, and the quality of the eyeshadows is much better than what I’ve experienced with past drugstore palettes.

The matte shades are especially well chosen, since you have a base/highlight shade, a taupe that makes a good transition shade, a dark brown, and a matte black. Honestly, the mattes are the stars of the palette, since they are super pigmented and a little goes a long way, plus they blend beautifully.

The shimmers are lovely, particularly the gold, copper, rose gold and bronzy-brown shades. They are decently pigmented but not as intense as the mattes, so you need more product to get the full colour pay-off.

Overall, every single shade in this palette is beautiful, and they all apply evenly and blend well. They are not patchy at all and there is no fall out. I’m truly impressed by the quality of this palette.

Another pro is the slim compact packaging that not only looks nice, but is lightweight and easy to travel with, especially since this palette covers a wide variety of looks from day to night.

Naturally, I think the price is pretty darn good, especially for the colour selection, quality and versatility of this palette. Quite frankly, I think it’s one of the best eyeshadow palettes I’ve tried from the drugstore, and a fantastic choice for someone who loves neutrals but doesn’t want to break the bank for a good quality palette.

Just a note on lasting power: I always use an eyeshadow primer, since my lids are too oily for anything to last otherwise, so I can’t comment on how it does without primer. However, if your lids are oily, the Joe Fresh Eyeshadow Primer is awesome (and a bargain!) for making your eyeshadow last all day.

the bad

While the Joe Fresh Neutrals palette has greatly impressed me on several counts, there are some aspects that could be improved.

The colour-payoff of the shimmer shades is good but not great, as you need to pick up a lot of product in order to get it to show up properly (unlike the mattes, which are dreamy in terms of formula) Don’t get me wrong, the shimmery eyeshadows are pigmented, but not nearly as intense as you would expect them to be based on the swatches or if you were to compare them to the mattes.

A minor issue is that the eyeshadows (mainly the shimmers) kick up a quite a bit of powder, mostly because you really need to get your brush/finger in there to get enough product, so the palette can get a bit messy (especially since it’s white). On the other hand, you can easily wipe it clean and I haven’t noticed any fallout while applying it to the eyes, so it’s not a huge problem.

Lastly, there is no mirror, which would have been great to have because this palette seems to be ideal for traveling (compact, lightweight, excellent shade selection). You can live without it, but it would have been real handy to have it built-in.

Joe Fresh Neutrals Eye Shadow Palette

the verdict

Overall, I highly recommend this palette to anyone who is looking for a great quality, well-thought out and inexpensive eyeshadow palette that features both mattes and shimmers. It has more than enough options for simple or dramatic makeup looks, and it even has a few unique shades which I didn’t expect but am happy to see in a neutral palette (rose gold, copper, gold..)

It’s also a great choice if you’re looking for something versatile, lightweight and compact for bringing along with you on your travels.

Despite its minor flaws, it’s quickly become one of my favourite eyeshadow palettes, and hands down one of the best drugstore ones I’ve ever tried. And I may have gotten my friend addicted to it as well… 😛

If you do give it a try, let me know what you think of it!
