Now that autumn’s here, it’s definitely time to bring out the taupe eyeshadow. Even though I love wearing this shade all year long, I find it especially appropriate for autumn.
My love affair with taupe eyeshadow began sometime in 2014, with the 5th shade in my very first neutral eyeshadow palette, the Clinique Neutral Territory 2 All About Shadow 8-Pan Palette.
Since then, I’ve expanded my makeup horizons and discovered some great matte and shimmery taupes that I love to wear any time of year.
the drugstore palette
This was the taupe that truly started it all, the 5th shade in the Makeup Revolution Iconic Pro 1 palette. Not only is this mauvey shade absolutely gorgeous and makes my brown eyes pop, but the formulation is so smooth and soft that it makes it a pleasure to apply.
Actually, all the matte shades in this palette are stellar, while some of the shimmers are so-so. Besides the mattes, two noteworthy shades are the one directly underneath the taupe (a lovely shimmery darker taupe) and the red one next to it, which makes a killer smoky red eye.

If you just want a beautiful matte taupe and not an entire eyeshadow palette, I would recommend the NYX Hot Singles Eye Shadow in Coquette.
Beyond the cute name and packaging, you actually get a beautiful taupe that is practically identical to my beloved one in the Makeup Revolution palette above. However, the pigmentation is not as great, but it can be built up with a little bit of effort. It’s worth it if you’re looking for this particular shade in a matte formulation without having to purchase an entire palette.
While this one’s a touch more brown, it’s a surprisingly useful product. The NYX High Definition Blush in Taupe is a fairly well-known and widely recommended product for contouring and while I bought it with the intention of learning how to contour, it’s something I’m still figuring out.. 😛
Still, I didn’t want it to go to waste, so I played with it and I found out that it makes a fantastic transition colour as well as a beautiful subtly sculpting blush.
On the rare occasion that I try my hand at contouring, this is a great product as it’s not too warm.
All in all, a great matte taupe that makes a lovely eyeshadow, blush and contour!
the bargain eye crayon
This beauty…where do I begin? I picked it up the Essence 2 in 1 Eye Shadow & Liner in 06 She’s Got the Mauve to try out as soon as I saw that they came out with eye crayons (and you know how I feel about makeup in stick/crayon form <3 <3 <3).
While it’s darker than I expected, it’s a gorgeous shimmery and surprisingly long-lasting mauvey taupe. Even on my oily lids, it lasted about 4-5 hours without primer (normally anything I apply without primer would be long gone by then), so I’m doubly impressed.
It pulls more purple than the others and is a bit darker, but I think it’s an awesome option to quickly swipe on. You can wear it either as a soft wash of colour or full-intensity for a more dramatic look. The pigmentation is excellent and there’s no patchyness in sight, and the price is a total bargain (around $5).
Overall, a great pick for a quality but inexpensive purply-taupe crayon!
the beloved palette
I think it’s a shame that not more people talk about the wonderful Clinique 8-Pan Palettes, as I really enjoy the colours and am totally in love with the formula of their eyeshadows.
This palette in particular, the Wear Everywhere Greys All About Shadow 8-Pan Palette, has two gorgeous taupes: the matte High Tea and the shimmery Mushroom right beside it.
Both of these are stunners and apply smoothly, evenly and blend out like a dream. They have great pigmentation and are so buttery soft that I just can’t get enough of them. All the shades in this palette are beautiful, but these two taupes are my absolute favourites.

And there you have it, my top taupes for the autumn (or any time of year)! I can’t put my finger on it, but there’s something about this colour that is so lovely and intriguing that I can’t help but gravitate towards it.
Thank you so much for coming by, and let me know if you are also a taupe lover down below.
Take care & see you soon!
